Album Art, A Musical Revolution returns to the Brook Gallery. The Stormstudios Exhibition is taking place on 4 April – 4 May 2014.
Brook Gallery will be playing host to Rupert Truman, celebrity Studio photographer of Stormstudios to launch this Easter’s fascinating spectacle of iconic album art to engage all the senses. The exhibition will launch in the gallery,with a pre-launch Q&A with Rupert Truman at Ocean House café (High Street, Budleigh Salterton) which will be showing selected works and props for the duration of the event.
Following on from the overwhelming success of our album Art show in 2013, Brook Gallery is delighted to be given the opportunity to work with Stormstudios and explore the archive works and props of the creative genius, Storm Thorgerson and his team. Only the third show of its kind, Brook’s forthcoming exhibition features recent and classic Album Cover Art, spanning two decades of combined music and artistic mastery!
Storm Thorgerson was the creative force behind theHipgnosis design group, founded together with Aubrey Powell in 1968. Their images became synonymous with the biggest names in rock ‘n’ roll including Pink Floyd, Genesis, Led Zeppelin and Yes. Storm started designing ‘by accident’, and produced album art for over 40 years. The challengewas always to create an image that would reflect the music, to quote Storm “Art is about flights of imagination, it’s all about trying to find some way to translate the music into a picture.”
StormStudios, formed over twenty years ago, has continued in the same prolific vein, designing images for Muse, Biffy Clyro, 10cc, The Cranberries, Pink Floyd and Powderfinger to name a few. Storm died in April 2013. He was 69 years old, and remained fully engaged with the job he loved right up until the end of his life. As he wished, StormStudios is carrying on and is producing new work in the same peculiar tradition, creating impossible images that engage the eye, confuse the mind and resonate with the music.
