This year’s fundraising beating retreat ceremony and supper, which took place on a lovely evening at Chatsworth on the eve of the Country Fair, raised over £6,000 for the Soldiers’ Charity. A drinks reception in the members’ marquee was followed by the Beating Retreat ceremony in the Grand Ring, which was conducted this year at a lively pace by the Band and Bugles of The Rifles, whose regimental motto is ‘Swift and Bold’. Guests then moved to the Carriage House Restaurant for supper. General Sir Mike Jackson, former Chief of the General Staff and President of the charity, gave an immensely informative and entertaining after-dinner speech about the charity. There were also presentations to Major Roger Heap , who retired as chairman of the fund-raising committee after a 40-year membership, and ex-Sherwood Forester Mick Doyle of Derby who has raised over £10,000 in the last few years. The Soldiers’ Charity’s Regional director, Mjr (Retd) Nick Bodian, thanked everyone for their tremendous support.
