Author Elizabeth Birchall recently attended the Oxfordshire launch of her new book, In Praise of Bees: A Cabinet of Curiosities.
Both Jaffe & Neale Bookshop in Chipping Norton, and The Book House in Summertown, Oxford, drew crowds to hear Elizabeth discuss this fascinating and multi-faceted insect. Publisher Andrew Johnston, of Quiller Books, said he was “delighted to publish this informative book” on the perpetually popular bee.

In Praise of Bees: A Cabinet of Curiosities
From the representation of the bee as a symbol in society to the myth and folklore passed down through generations, Enstone resident Elizabeth Birchall provides many fascinating facts about bees.
Thematic chapters draw upon classical, medieval and modern literature on beekeeping. Also covered is the history of hive design – often outlandish and extravagant – as well as details of the insect’s sensory perceptions, the therapeutic potential of bee products, and a discussion of how their abilities might serve to assist mankind in space exploration and even with the detection of landmines.
The book is beautifully illustrated with pictures and paintings drawn from historical art, scientific etchings and modern photographs, and is a joy to behold.
