A West Somerset dock master has been presented with a bravery certificate by Somerset County Council for his heroic efforts in saving a six-month-old baby’s life.
George Reeder, aged 63, rescued baby Sam whose pushchair was blown into the water at Watchet harbour by strong winds in January.
After diving into the sea he pulled the pushchair to the quayside and was then helped by others to haul it out of the water.
Following his rescue from the water the baby was given CPR and he was airlifted to hospital by the air ambulance. He has made a full recovery.
Mr Reeder was in the Coastguard for 26 years and he is a former life guard. He was also given a council plaque and silk tie by Council Chairman Councillor John Edney.
Receiving his certificate and gifts, Mr Reeder said: “Thank you for this honour. I am very grateful for the gifts but I was just working as part of a team who helped save the baby.
“Everyone else did their bit too. I am glad we had a positive result.”
