Hurrah for the fourth year of the Chipping Norton Literary Festival, back this April for a four-day Cotswold celebration of readers, writers and lovers of words.

Over 50 events will be held around Chippy’s golden town centre, in eight different venues, including the theatre, the town hall, the Chequers Inn and the Methodist church. The festival organisers relish bringing big names to intimate, local venues, working with independent booksellers Jaffé & Neale to celebrate books of all genres.

One of the hot-ticket-happenings is The Richard and Judy Book Club event, where Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan will be interviewed by writer Julie Cohen. Julie says: “Having my book Dear Thing chosen for Richard and Judy’s book club last year was absolutely thrilling. I’m relishing the chance to turn the tables and talk with the couple about their new books, The Way You Look Tonight and I Do Not Sleep. It will be great to ask them questions and find how they work as writers.”

Thriller fans are also in for a massive treat, with the chance to hear crime heavy-weight Lee Child in conversation with festival patron Mark Billingham. Mark says, “Lee’s a mate and we’re both Brummies, so it should be nice and relaxed... I’m hugely looking forward to it and, knowing Lee, I can guarantee the audience a great event.”

As ever, there’s also a lot going on for writers as well as readers: literary agent Peter Buckman will be leading the Trade Secrets creative writing day, and agent Carole Blake will be inviting pitches from aspiring novelists. Some great authors will be leading workshops, including Julie Cohen, Amanda Jennings and Emily Barr.

Want to encourage your child to read? Then bring them to one of the special events for children, such as meeting Stinkbomb and Ketchupface author, John Dougherty. Or for 7-12 year olds, there’s swashbuckling adventure in a comic-creation workshop with the brilliant Neill Cameron.
