Where can you buy a £2 coin for £420, or pick up a fifty pence piece for £360?
The answer is at Moore Allen & Innocent’s antiques auction in Cirencester where, on Friday (April 26), collectors bid for the chance to own a 22ct gold £2 coin.
Minted in 1995 and embossed with a design depicting the dove of peace to mark the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II, the 15.98 gram proof coin in presentation case contained over 91 percent pure gold, and the winning bid, said auctioneer Philip Allwood, reflected the current gold price.
It was a similar story when two 15.5 gram 22ct gold Royal Mint fifty pence pieces – one from 2003, the other dated 1998, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the NHS – were offered for sale, achieving winning bids of £360 each.
But the lots to watch were timepieces. A Tudor Oyster Prince wristwatch with certificate attracted a winning bid of £1,900 – the top price of the day – while a Tag Heuer CS3112 wristwatch with brown leather strap and original case achieved was handed second place at £650.
And with time very much on their side, the auctioneers ticked off a Sinn wristwatch at £460.
From Sinn to vice, a pine workbench with wooden vice gripped bidders in the furniture section, achieving a winning bid of £460.
And driving up the sale total was a 1998 Jaguar Sovereign 4-litre V8 on Guernsey plates, and with 104,000 miles on the clock, which achieved £600.
