Let’s face it. Ironing is one of the most repetitive tasks possible for a grown adult human being. But it’s something that has always been done – and needed to be done.

Wet laundry powering through mangles, then steaming beneath irons, has been the process since the early 19th century. Although the technology of laundry and irons has vastly improved with the introduction of washing machines, tumble dryers and electric irons, the actual mechanics of sliding steam-heated metal across cloth to straighten it has not changed for generations.

The steam is the key aspect here. We all know the feeling of using a budget supermarket iron which spits out a pitiful amount of steam, making the ironing process even longer than it should be.

Electronics company Braun claims to have solved the problem that has plagued the domestic environment for generations – halving the amount of time spent ironing.

The Braun CareStyle 3 iron is a new addition to the Braun premium range, an ironing system which halves the amount of steam needed to remove creases in clothes, and therefore halves the amount of time spent ironing.

The soleplate combines a special coating with a unique curved shape, inspired by the shape of a snowboard. Round, bevelled edges are specifically designed to move easily over fabric and embellishments, zips, seams and buttons. This makes it far easier to iron and care for higher quality clothes, keeping them smarter for longer.

Laundry and the domestic environment has come a long way since the Victorian times, when the irons were made – literally – of iron, garnering the name. In the age of smartphones and Silicon Valley, Braun’s modern innovation is a lightweight yet compact iron which fits easily on the end of an ironing board.

It delivers twice as much steam pressure as a normal iron, which is made possible by an extra two-litre tank of water used as a base unit. A full tank keeps the iron running for as long as two hours without being stopped and re-filled.

The icing on the cake, as far as domestic gods and goddesses are concerned, is the smart textile protection built into the iCare technology. It is used to set the right temperature for every fabric, from delicate to robust. This technology makes it almost impossible to burn clothes, and leaving scorch marks and stains is a thing of the past.

With double the steam pressure of a traditional iron, Braun are hoping the CareStyle 3 will reclaim your day and do your wardrobe justice. The only real proving ground for this is the home itself.
