Glorious sunshine and all the promised entertainment and excitement ensured that thousands of visitors descended on the Elvaston Showground for the 135th Derbyshire County Show
The Devil’s Horsemen Stunt Display Team, TV favourite Titan the Robot and the Essex Dog Display Team were among the stars of the main ring. Devotees of anything equestrian had plenty to enjoy with numerous horse classes, carriage driving, showjumping, the ever-popular heavy horse turnouts and the addition this year of a farrier competition. Those interested in other forms of transport wandered around the displays of vintage cars, tractors and motorcycles, while cattle, sheep, dogs, poultry and rabbits also had a chance to shine with classes seeing a large number of high quality entries. The Horticultural and Floral Art marquee was just one of the marquees that provided welcome respite from the sun – as did the Derbyshire Federation of WIs, the craft village and Food Hall. Displays of hedge laying, dry stone walling and rural crafts added a taste of Derbyshire’s rural heritage. Chairman of the Derbyshire County Show Society, Edward Hicklin commented: ‘It was our turn this year – the weather was good and the crowds turned out in large numbers to see a great show. Entries across all sections were well supported and of a high class. We were delighted to welcome the Duke of Devonshire to re-present a trophy lost to the Society 100 years ago, which was recently purchased by the Society with a generous donation from one of our past Presidents. There has been a great effort from everyone involved with the Show and I would like to thank them all. The Society has already got plans under way for next year’s Show and we look forward to welcoming everyone back to the showground on 28th June 2015.’
