Derbyshire Life Women in Business Champagne Breakfast at the Izaak Walton Hotel

Businesswomen from across the county attended Derbyshire Life’s networking event and champagne breakfast, held at the Izaak Walton Hotel
Finding time to relax and enjoy some interesting conversation, good food and something sparkling all at the same time doesn’t happen very often. So being greeted by a glass of champagne at 10.30am in the picturesque surroundings of the Izaak Walton Hotel was a welcome treat for guests at Derbyshire Life’s Women in Business event.
Situated between the scenic villages of Ilam and Thorpe in the heart of the Peak District National Park, and just a stone’s throw from idyllic Dovedale, the iconic 17th century guest house combines traditional and tranquil surroundings with stunning views towards Thorpe Cloud.
The hotel was purchased by James Keay and his wife Amanda in March 2014 and is currently managed by Shura Prince. Following a period of uncertainty for the venue in 2013 the couple have drawn up some exciting plans to secure the hotel’s long term future and success. This has included a programme of careful renovations, with a restaurant that continues to offer a memorable dining experience for both hotel residents and locals and the introduction of wedding ceremonies held in the gardens.
The building’s transformation to bring its facilities and furnishings right up to date continues, and guests could fully appreciate the attention to detail and high standards of workmanship in the newly-refurbished Haddon Restaurant.
The formal fine dining area, now classically decorated with elegant gold wallpaper, richly-coloured carpets and tables covered in crisp white linen, was the perfect place to enjoy breakfast.
The event provided an opportunity to network and celebrate achievements and ladies from a range of occupations, including solicitors, food producers and boutique owners, enjoyed welcoming glasses of fizz or fruit juice before sitting down to freshly-cooked choices of smoked salmon and scrambled eggs, eggs benedict or lighter – but no less delicious – options of fresh fruit, natural yoghurt and granola. This was followed by tea, coffee and a myriad of delectable pastries. The restaurant is loyal to local food suppliers and the quality of ingredients was evident.
James Northard of Chesterfield-based wine merchants The Austin’s Group then gave a knowledgeable talk on Champagne and Prosecco. James explained the differences between the two, the varieties produced in different regions and – most importantly – what to look for in a good glass of Champagne. This was followed by some enthusiastic tasting!

Many guests had travelled far and made the most of the chance to take some time out before getting back to the stresses of a hectic day. Relaxing surroundings, pleasant company, beautiful scenery and a Champagne breakfast – who could ask for anything more? w
