LOUISA MCPHIE

Managing Director - High Peak Bookstore and Cafe

What's special about your business?

High Peak Bookstore and Cafe (formerly Bookstore Brierlow Bar) is a family run business and labour of love, established in January 2001 by my dad, in an old garage 2 miles south of Buxton. The mix of locally roasted coffee, homemade food, thousands of books covering a vast range of genres and local arts and crafts, all with a focus on bringing people together and supporting the local community in a warm, friendly and creative environment is what makes High Peak Bookstore and Cafe so special and successful.

What's the best piece of business advice you have been given?

Fake it until you make it. This stood me in very good stead as I made the transition from Early Years and Literacy Co-ordinator in a Primary School to MD of a flourishing business!

What do you love about your job?

I get to work with some of the most wonderful, talented, funny, kind people and meet some incredibly interesting members of the public. I love that the staff and customers love being here. I love that every day is different - one day I'm in the Lake District buying books, the next I could be planning upcoming events or thinking of what to do next to improve our customer's experience. Oh, and I can bring my dogs to work!

NINA SHEARD

Director - Hunters

What's special about your business?

Our business was established 90 years ago and we feel a big responsibility to ensure it stays at the forefront of good quality home interiors that are built to last. We deliver nationwide but we always think about our local customers first. We consider the types of architecture in Derbyshire and we're always listening to our customers about what they'd like from us. Again and again it's to keep providing inspirational interiors with a standard of service to match. We introduced our home design service for people who wanted a more tailored experience, whether that's because they want to do a home refresh but are time poor or they simply prefer a more personal at home service.

What's your best piece of business advice?

Tackle any challenges as soon as they arise. You might not find the solution straight away, but you'll have started the journey towards solving it without causing any extra stress.

What do you love about your job?

It's different every day; I could be visiting a customer with our design service, out at a supplier sourcing new furniture or accessories then catching up with the team about what's been going on in-store.
