Save St Leonards

Dear Editor,

The plight and potential loss of a much loved historic landmark and our local ancient church in its romantic lakeside setting, St Leonards in Hartley Mauditt is one common, no doubt, to many villages throughout the county. A special quiet oasis of beauty and calm, yet only a short distance from our homes and the major rail and road networks necessary to service our busy and frantic lives. We must not lose it!

In the coming years, as church attendance dwindles with the passing of older church goers, a threat almost on a Tudor scale awaits our churches. Whilst national bodies are set up to address and aid the lucky few, the question remains what can a village community do to with a few willing hearts and hands?

Our community, much enchanted by St Leonards as a place of worship, its ancient and intimate space the setting for many a marriage, christening and

funeral, has risen to the challenge of raising the funds required to access greater sums from English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery fund.

The first of these, our ‘Raise the Roof Ball’ and Auction of promises is set for July 5th to be held in the village. Pledges of help and sponsorship have been made but we have a long way to go. If your readers could offer advice, sponsorship, prizes, donations or a willing pair of hands we would love to hear from you.
