At some point in our lives we’re likely to encounter difficulties with our mental health, or know some who has. Stress, anxiety and depression are all topics which are being talked about more but do you know where to look for help when a panic attack or depression hits you?

One organisation that prides itself on its compassionate and collaborative approach to 'helping people to live well with themselves so that we all live better together' is The Retreat, a York-based mental health charity supporting people who need expert therapy to improve their mental wellbeing.

Dr Kim Bevan, chief officer- clinical services at The Retreat shared with us how they've been a grounding presence in the community for more than 200 years and can help people struggling with mental health difficulties and provide hope.

"As an independent charity, whose foundations were built on compassion, we provide care to people who refer themselves and those who are referred to us by GPs and other professionals. We can often help when others can't, enabling people to recover and get their lives back on track."

A skilled team of counsellors, psychologists and therapists will listen to you in a non-judgemental way in a private, confidential setting. They can help you with your current difficulties, past experiences or anxieties about your future with the aim of helping you improve the quality of your life and relationships.

One person who believes The Retreat has 'helped him to get his life back on track' is James, who sought treatment when he hit a downward spiral, experiencing debilitating episodes of anxiety and becoming dependent on alcohol after a stressful family event.

Dr Bevan said: "James's story is not unusual - he had a successful career and a comfortable home but was caught in a cycle of self-loathing and depression which hit him hard."

In James's case, he moved off his medication after a personalised course of therapy and was able to benefit from therapy sessions delivered via a secure video link - consultations with his psychologist could be organised at a time and place which suited him. "We specialise in tailored care which is effective and personalised to what people need. Our team is here to help people realise that they're not alone," explained Dr Bevan.
