Kenneth Woolley, one of the great sportsmen of the Ribble Valley, was honoured for his many achievements at a lunch held at the Gibbon Bridge Hotel, writes Richard Greenwood. At Sedbergh School Ken was head boy, captain of rugby and captain of boxing. During National Service in the Black Watch he played rugby for the British Army. He was captain of Blackburn RUFC in the 1952/3 season, president from 1970-74 and is currently honorary captain.
He has been involved with the Anti-Assassins, the north-west’s premier invitational representative team, since its inception in 1950 and is the honorary life president. Ken refereed in the 50s, 60s and 70s and was an an influential member of Stonyhurst Park Golf Club in its formative years. Ken somehow managed to find time to run the very succesful family pharmaceutical supply business.
Four speakers paid tribute and Ken’s charming speech brought the lunch to a close. It generated a surplus of £225, which has been donated to the Wooden Spoon, the charity supporting disadvantaged younsters.
