Anne Chambers, of the world-renowned Kiftsgate Court Gardens in Chipping Campden in Gloucestershire, is encouraging gardeners in the Cotswolds to plant a bulb for gynaecological cancer this autumn.
The third generation of woman gardeners at Kiftsgate Court Gardens, Anne Chambers is supporting the Lady Gardener Network’s Plant a Bulb campaign to raise awareness and funds to support groundbreaking research funded by the Gynaecological Cancer Fund at The Royal Marsden in London.
Anne Chambers said: “I am delighted to be supporting the Lady Gardener network here in the Cotswolds. All research into gynaecological cancer is so worthwhile and I am sure we all know someone who has suffered from this dreadful disease. Gardening is a great healer of the mind and body and has served my family well for nearly one hundred years at Kiftsgate. Women have also played an enormous part in the creating and tending of great gardens here in the Cotswolds, my own family has thrived with three generations of women gardeners.”
RHS Chelsea Gold Medal winner Charlotte Rowe is also backing the campaign. Charlotte has a personal reason for wanting to make people more aware of the five ‘silent’ gynaecological cancers. Despite having had a hysterectomy in her late thirties, Charlotte’s mother died earlier this year of ovarian cancer over 40 years later. She had had no symptoms until less than three months before she died and the cancer diagnosis was only given to her six weeks before her death. Charlotte also had a sub-total hysterectomy in her late forties.
The award-winning landscape designer, whose No Man’s Land garden marking the centenary of the First World War at Chelsea captured the hearts of the nation in 2014, helped to launch the Lady Gardener Network earlier this year to raise funds and the Plant a Bulb campaign is its first major campaign.
Charlotte said: “A bulb is a wonderful symbol of hope for the future. We want to hear from people all over the UK who are supporting us us in this campaign.
