The Right Reverend Libby Lane was installed as the Eighth Bishop of Derby at the Cathedral Church of All Saints.
Bishop Libby, who is originally from Glossop, became the Church of England's first female bishop in 2015, since when she has occupied the post of Suffragan Bishop of Stockport.
The occasion began with a joyous procession from the railway station and through intu Derby, accompanied by her husband, George, children from local Church of England schools and flag bearers. At the Market Place the Bishop was joined by Lord-Lieutenant William Tucker, High Sheriff William Burlington, civic representatives and leaders of faith communities. They continued to the Cathedral where they were welcomed by dancers from the local branch of the National Liturgical Dance Network, who also later began the service.
Officials and dignitaries entered the Cathedral before the doors were closed and then, according to tradition, Bishop Libby struck the door three times with her staff for admittance. Other traditions
included Bishop Libby being anointed with oil, garlanded with flowers, vested in the Diocesan cope and mitre and given the pastoral staff, as well as taking her place in the episcopal seat or cathedra.
After readings and prayers she preached her first sermon as the Bishop of Derby and once the service had concluded, Bishop Libby stood at the west door to bless the 'city, county and Diocese of Derby and all who live and work here'.
