The 2012 Mendip Building Excellence Awards, sponsored by Bradfords Building Supplies, took place on Friday 16 March at Glastonbury Town Hall.

The Mendip Building Excellence Awards ceremony was extended this year to incorporate a total of 20 categories celebrating the excellence of building quality in a variety of projects from large commercial, education and housing projects, to domestic refurbishments. There were also awards for conservation, sustainability and best partnership.

Mendip District Council’s Building Excellence Awards also recognise and emphasise the importance of Mendip District Council’s Building Control service in creating a high quality, sustainable built environment in the district.

The council’s Building Control team helps to ensure better design and construction by working in cooperation with developers, designers and builders to avoid costly corrections during construction and to make sure projects comply with the highest standards of safety, sustainability and accessibility.

Nigel Hunt, Mendip District Council’s building control manager said, “The standard of entries was once again extremely high showing the excellent work that is being carried out in Mendip. All the finalists deserve recognition for their great work in helping to improve building standards, boost sustainability and efficiency and show that despite a difficult economic backdrop, standards do not have to slip. Our congratulations go to the finalists – and especially the winners and those who are highly commended.”

Around 200 construction professionals and customers attended the ceremony. Cllr Nigel Woollcombe-Adams presented the winners with their awards which were specially commissioned plaques from Black Dog of Wells.

Cllr Woollcombe-Adams, portfolio holder for Built Environment at Mendip District Council, said “These awards give builders, developers and individuals the chance to be proud of their successful designs and approach to managing their projects. The ceremony is a chance for Mendip District Council to recognise the excellent work undertaken in the district by those who build and manage projects to the highest standard.

"The Building Control department at the council has excellent relations with the many people who are developing in Mendip, and these awards show how important this cooperation is in ensuring such high levels of quality and excellence are maintained."

All of the winners and highly commended will now be nominated for the LABC South West Regional Awards which take place on Friday, 8 June 2012 in Torquay.
