The expectation they have of their pupils to make the most of their time at the college, truly makes a Mount Kelly education stand apart from the rest.

Mount Kelly , set on the edge of Dartmoor National Park and the outskirts of the lovely market Town of Tavistock, is a co-educational, boarding and day school for children aged 3 to 18 years. Academic excellence is our business and we are proud of the achievements of our pupils in the classroom and our public examination results. However, a good education is about so much more than examination results and it is the breadth of opportunity on offer.

Performing Arts are for everyone and every year group at the Prep puts on an annual production with many other opportunities to perform in both formal and informal concerts. At the College our Chamber Choir competes internationally and has recently been crowned winner at the Barnardo’s School Choir of the Year competition at the Royal Festival Hall in London.

Mount Kelly enjoys an enviable reputation for the quality of our outdoor education programme, and year after year significant numbers of our pupils paddle 125 miles from Devizes to Westminster, complete their Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award, or walk 55 miles across the Moor as part of the Ten Tors Challenge. This enthusiasm begins at the Prep with our own Shackleton programme. Our younger pupils are given the opportunity to challenge themselves beyond their comfort zone and experience a wide variety of adventurous activities as part of a programme that builds resilience and confidence, develops leadership and initiative and improves communication skills, problem solving and team-work. The importance of ‘service’ begins here too as Mount Kelly is increasingly engaged with our local community, and offer a wide range of volunteering opportunities, both in support of the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme, and for its own sake.

Pupils also have the opportunity to try their hand at offshore sailing in our boat, Olga. Olga is a 56 foot cutter and one of the most significant boats on the National Historic Ships Register. Offshore sailing is unparalleled in the opportunities it gives for personal growth and development and the experience of crewing a sailing ship out of sight of land is truly unforgettable.

We strongly believe that these activities not only offer unique opportunities for personal growth, but present challenges and experiences that really are central to ‘a life-defining education’.

Sport is an important part of life at Mount Kelly and we aim to provide a sporting environment in which every pupil is given the opportunity to achieve their potential. Our core values of Respect, Commitment, Compassion, Courage, Integrity and Humility are at the heart of everything we do. We strive for excellence both in performance and attitude and cater for everyone – regardless of ability – by providing first class coaching, facilities and opportunities to train and compete.

The School has an internationally recognised coaching facility for swimming with an 8 lane, 50m pool and a 4 lane, 25 metre pool on site. Our swimmers board and are taught alongside their contemporaries. This creates a culture in which the level of commitment and dedication required to excel are not considered out of the ordinary but are qualities to which everyone can aspire. In 2020 Mount Kelly won the prestigious National Arena Swimming League, defeating much larger clubs including Millfield, Plymouth and Guildford; a defining moment for our small school in West Devon. We are also proud of our alumni, members of whom have competed at the last 5 Olympic and Paralympic games.
