£500,000 restoration of Newby Hall orangery

A VIP reception was held to mark the revival of an 18th century orangery at Newby Hall, Ripon.

The Grade I listed building has undergone a £500,000 restoration programme which included reinstatement of the building’s original floor to ceiling windows as well as the renovation of the Victorian wooden solid beamed roof, redesigned to enable removal of three central pillars, and the installation of under floor heating.

Phase two of the project, a sympathetically designed glazed and covered entrance hall and kitchen, completes the building. The work was part funded with a £90,000 grant from the Country Houses Foundation.

Newby Hall, built in the 1690s by Sir Christopher Wren was later enlarged by John Carr and Robert Adam. The orangery commissioned by William Weddell dates from 1770.
