Weymouth boys do battle in the sand
While the world’s greatest football teams fight it out in Brazil some of Dorset’s finest sand sculptors will be doing battle at another world championships in Atlantic City. Sandworld’s master craftsmen, Mark Anderson and co-founder David Hicks will be competing in the World Sand Sculpting Competition in Atlantic City. The Weymouth duo along with 20 other sculptors from around the globe will have 10 tonnes of sand and just 30 hours to complete their sculptures. The boys have put plenty of practice in already having helped compile the popular books’ and authors’ theme currently on display at the Sandworld venue in Lodmoor Country Park. The team of 12 sculptors took just two weeks to create 16 life-size sand structures ranging from Lord of the Rings to Sherlock Holmes.

Local designer welcomes Prince Charles to her showrooms
When Bridport-based interior designer Cat White recently opened her first showroom and retail outlet in Poundbury, she probably wasn’t expecting a royal visit. But a few weeks after opening HRH Prince Charles, who was the driving force behind the creation of Poundbury, decided to drop in for a chat and have a look around CW Interiors. “We were told by The Duchy of Cornwall that HRH was due to visit us, as we have quite a prominent position in The Buttermarket, the artisan sector of Poundbury which is starting to become populated with lots of independent retailers and businesses,” said Cat.
“He particularly admired our black pendant lampshades which were a vintage find. Our trademark style is to mix contemporary interiors with vintage treasures so I was pleased that the lights seemed to meet with ‘royal approval’.” For the last three years Cat has been trading from her home studio but with her business expanding she needed to find a new location. “The Buttermarket seemed to fit the CW Interiors brand perfectly and the Prince’s visit has given us a thrilling start.”

Art lovers in Dorset can now view a painting usually only seen in galleries in European capitals after the National Trust’s Kingston Lacy took receipt of a loan from the National Gallery in London for the first time.
‘Homage to Velázquez’ by acclaimed 17th century Italian artist Luca Giordano, will hang in the dining room of Kingston Lacy until 21 September as a reciprocal loan for their painting ‘Judgement of Solomon’ by Sebastiano del Piombo. Giordano was one of the best travelled Neapolitan painters of his day. From 1692 he spent ten years at the court of King Charles II of Spain and studied Velazquez’s work in detail.
