Prestwich-born television and radio presenter Beverley Turner and her husband, double Olympic rowing gold medallist James Cracknell, were among more than 300 supporters who attended a Bollywood Ball which raised £27,000 for the Northern Cleft Foundation.

The charity, founded in Blackburn, provides free surgery to children in India who are too poor to afford operations to correct palete and lip defects. The money raised at The Dunkenhalgh Hotel in Clayton-le-Moors will pay for another 135 operations on top of the 700 already performed since the charity was formed in 2001.
