Sunday 30 November 2014 | 3.00pm | Eastbourne Congress Theatre | Beethoven Violin Concerto - Brahms Symphony No. 1

Aziz Shokhakimov conductor

Dmitri Berlinsky violin

***

Brilliant young conductor Aziz Shokhakimov burst onto the scene in 2011, and this year conducts his debut with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, taking on Brahms’s powerful Symphony No. 1. Inspired by an anguished love and composed with the weighty influence of Beethoven in mind, this work is the first of Brahms’s glorious symphonic output.

Award-winning violinist Dmitri Berlinsky, who’s triumphs include at the International Tchaikovsky Competition and Montreal International Violin Competition, joins the Orchestra to perform the joyful violin solo of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto. Beethoven apparently finished the dazzling solo line of the concerto so late that Franz Clement, the virtuoso performing its debut in 1806, had to sight read passages of it! Despite this, the work has become one of the best-loved and most-played in the violin repertoire, and will be sure to receive a spectacular performance by Berlinsky.

London Philharmonic Orchestra

One of the finest orchestras on the international stage, the London Philharmonic Orchestra was founded in 1932 by Sir Thomas Beecham. Since then, its Principal Conductors have included Sir Adrian Boult, Sir Georg Solti, Klaus Tennstedt and Kurt Masur. In 2007 Vladimir Jurowski became the Orchestra’s Principal Conductor.

The London Philharmonic Orchestra has been performing at Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall since it opened in 1951, becoming Resident Orchestra in 1992. It also has residencies in Brighton and Eastbourne, and performs regularly around the UK. The Orchestra regularly tours abroad: highlights of the 2014/15 season include visits to Turkey, Iceland, the USA (West and East Coast), Canada, China and Australia.

The Orchestra broadcasts regularly on television and radio, and has recorded soundtracks for numerous blockbusters including The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. In 2005 it began releasing live, studio and archive recordings on its own CD label.
