Cotswold-based plantsman and well respected designer Paul Hervey-Brookes, who won gold at Chelsea Flower Show this year and has guided an APL team at this year’s RHS Tatton Park Flower Show, has been invited to create a garden at the Gardening World Cup in Japan this year.
The Gardening World Cup takes place at the Palace Huis Ten Bosch show ground which is near Nagasaki. The show is open from October 12 to 20 and is the only annual show of its kind in the world. Designers are selected for their own style and to represent their country building a garden to the organisers theme. Paul’s Garden ‘What Are We’ is a 10-by-10-metre classically-inspired English garden which draws inspiration from the Greek Exedra as a place to communicate, share ideas, values and experiences in. This according to Paul is the building block of the organisers theme of World Peace, and ‘it is only when we communicate as equals that we can learn from and value each other’. The garden includes sweeping mixed herbaceous borders and a nectar bar with traditional beehives.
Paul says, “I was thrilled to be asked to go to Japan and I am really looking forward to creating a garden which draws inspiration from both English Gardens and landscapes. It is ambitious to recreate such an identifiable space in another geographic location, but we are all really looking forward to the challenge.”
