The Lancashire Life Lake District dining pub of the year, The General Burgoyne at Great Urswick near Ulverston, staged a five-course banquet and allowed customers pay whatever they liked. It was all in a good cause and more than £2,500 was taken. It went to The Pennington Benevolent Fund, launched to support Paul and Clare Coulston from Pennington, who are both battling life-threatening illnesses.

The couple have two children, Finlay, 8, and Evelyn, 5. Money will go towards vital equipment for Mr Coulston and towards securing the future of the children.

Pub landlord Craig Sherrington said: ‘What a fantastic night, better than we could ever have hoped for. People really pulled together and made it a special occasion.’
