Finding love again
A couple who found love in a Taunton retirement village have tied the knot.
Blagdon Village celebrated its first wedding as Geoffrey Morton, 78, and June Smith, 73, got married.
The couple both moved to the village with their respective husband and wife, but sadly both were lost to cancer.
“What amazes us is that June was married for 42 years and myself for 53 years and you just don’t expect this sort of thing to happen,” explains Geoffrey, a former printer and publisher.
Geoffrey proposed to his new bride-to-be at the top of the Eiffel Tower in Paris in the spring and the couple have been planning the wedding ever since, as well as working out how to squeeze two households and belongings into one.
Geoffrey’s son was best man and June’s daughter matron of honour at the ceremony, which was followed by a reception in the village’s main lodge.
In true tradition, Geoffrey carried his new wife over the threshold and to the start of their new life together.
The following weekend the newlyweds celebrated further with a giant village party and will be heading off for a winter cruise for their honeymoon.
£15k grant
Age UK Somerset has received £15,000 from Somerset Community Foundation to continue and expand its vital work tackling loneliness and isolation among older people.
The funding, £5,000 per annum over three years, will support the charity’s befriending service, where provide companionship, social contact and support to older people.
Helping others
North Somerset Mencap held a cream tea at the Hawthorns Retirement Facility in Clevedon to raise money for its charity.
A grand total of £630 was raised and the Hawthorns supplied the cream tea and venue as a donation to the cause.
