Some of the biggest names in the world of journalism, literature, film and TV got together to raise money for the Sussex-based domestic abuse charity, Rise. Those talking part included Caitlin Moran, Suzanne Moore, Jackie Clune, Dora Dale, all-girl band Vanquish, Linda Lewis, Tracey Thorn, and BRIT Award winner, Grammy nominee and all-round singing legend, Alison Moyet.
Gail Gray, Chief Executive Officer of Rise, commented: “These women have used their energy, skills and incredible network of friends to make the event possible. And not just for one night. The effect of people just talking about this event, raising awareness and getting together to say a resounding no to domestic abuse will help to carry Rise forward. “We are marking our 20th anniversary this year. Our vision is that we won’t be needed in another 20 years’ time, and with your help that could just be possible!”
The event was the brainchild of writer Julie Burchill, who came up with the idea when she heard that Rise was having its funding cut. Co-founder Julie Graham commented: “After hearing about too many friends who had all recently experienced some sort of domestic abuse situation Julie came up with the idea of putting on a charity event that would highlight an increasing problem and at the same time raise money for a great cause. “I needed little persuasion to join our wonderful band of women in putting on what we hope will be a night to remember. It's been a privilege.”
