In May this year, Carrie Horwood of Cat’s Eye Carving organised and ran the Gloucester Stone Carving Festival.

The Festival brought together 17 stonemasons from this country and abroad, with the event culminating in an auction of the carvings that were created over the Bank Holiday weekend.

Thanks to Carrie’s carving of a mermaid, £1,500 was raised in raffle ticket sales, with the auction making just over £2,500 in profit. Of the money raised, £1,635 went to The Llanthony Secunda Priory Trust and the remaining money was presented to The Gloucester Geology Trust. Carrie will be returning with the festival in 2015 when she hopes to attract more stonemasons, making it a bigger and better festival.

The main sponsor was Veizey’s Quarry, near Tetbury, who generously donated all the stone for the festival and the have-a-go sessions which have proved so popular that they are a permanent fixture at Carrie’s workshop at Taurus Crafts, near Lydney.
