Situated in beautiful countryside north of York, Terrington Hall provides a nurturing learning environment for a child’s formative educational years of 3 to 13.

A smaller, friendly prep school, the emphasis is on developing happy, confident individuals with the self-belief and resilience to pursue their interests and talents, wherever they may lie.

The high level of individual attention care and attention extended to every child is supported by small class sizes, an enviable staff/pupil ratio, specialist teaching and strong pastoral care. Family-style dining promotes a strong sense of community and adds another dimension to the relationships between staff and pupils.

The focus in the early years is to develop a love of school and a love of learning whilst laying strong foundations for future academic success. Within an atmosphere of high but realistic expectations, encouraged to do their best and appreciated for the things they do well, children thrive at Terrington Hall. Additional support is available for those who need it and more challenging work is provided for learners ready to move to the next level.

From an early age, the Pre-Prep pupils have access to the main school facilities, including the computer suite, indoor swimming pool and sports hall. The core curriculum is enhanced by specialist teaching in Spanish, Music, Art, Swimming and Physical Education. Drama, performance and public speaking are part of the culture, well over half of pupils learn a musical instrument and everyone plays a part on the sports pitch too (including the new astro).

A Terrington education supports children in their journey to becoming fully rounded, well-mannered, confident and secure individuals who are ready to embrace all that their Senior School education has to offer. Whilst academic rigour is essential, the school firmly believes in the education of the whole person.

From Forest School in Nursery to campouts in Lower Prep to canoeing down the Ardeche Gorge in Year 7 and climbing a Via Ferrata in the Alps in Year 8, there is no shortage of adventures at Terrington. Such activities build confidence, resilience, self-esteem and emotional well-being and are designed to help children realise their potential.

Being untied to any senior school, Terrington Hall prepares its pupils for entry to a wide range of schools both locally and nationally. Each senior school is chosen in partnership with parents and with the best interests of the child in mind.

“I am hugely proud of all of the pupils at school and this year am delighted that ten Year Eight pupils at Terrington Hall School have won scholarships to their senior schools, a record number in the school’s 97-year history. The scholarships have been awarded for excellence in academia, art, drama, sport and all-round achievement by Ampleforth College, Repton School, Sedbergh School, Shrewsbury School, The Mount and Queen Margaret’s.

‘I could not be happier for our Year Eight pupils, all of whom have been offered places by their senior schools of choice - be they local to the York area or a boarding destination further afield.”
