Savage Hart by Citrus Arts has been nearly three years in the making with The Roses Theatre, Tewkesbury and Pontio in Bangor as producing partners, and Friday 16 September is Tewkesbury’s chance to experience this captivating, magical, and visually striking production.
Inspired in part by Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, Ceirw by Citrus Arts is a bewitching, original theatrical production, telling the story of a wealthy 19th century gentleman with a lust for hunting animals. One dark, fateful night, his trophies come back to life and attempt to make him realise the horror of what he’s done, with extraordinary consequences.
Ceirw utilises the skills of acrobatic dancers and circus artists, together with energetic choreography, aerial and contact work, to create an invigorating, historically led, cross art-form mix of circus, theatre, dance, mask and music. Set in an early 19th century dining room and accompanied by an evocative live music soundscape, Ceirw transforms the familiar into an altogether more other-worldly realm. This production reflects, with sometimes brutal honesty, how human attitudes to nature can be demonstrated by behaviour patterns, especially in relation to how they both nurture and cultivate it, as well as striving to control and dominate it too.
Citrus Arts are a South Wales based company founded in 2009 by Welsh artists James and Bridie Doyle-Roberts; their shared backgrounds in circus, street theatre, drama, and dance have afforded them the opportunity to work alongside, and learn from some of the UK’s leading practitioners and companies. They create original works that mix spectacle, physical skills and technical ingenuity to present thoughtful and progressive shows of high artistic quality.
Stunningly beautiful, and utterly haunting, the animal masks featured in Savage were commissioned exclusively for this production. These are works of art in themselves, and were exquisitely designed and handcrafted by internationally renowned felt artist Gladys Paulus.
