A team from Derby solicitors Flint Bishop were victorious at the third annual Derbyshire Brain Game, the charity fund-raising quiz evening in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care. More than 250 people took part in the evening at The Roundhouse in Derby, spending a thoroughly enjoyable, if slightly mind-bending, evening while raising over £28,000 to help provide end of life care for Derbyshire’s residents by Marie Curie nurses. The event was hosted by Edwina Currie, a long-time supporter of the charity and a special round of sports questions was delivered by Derby County manager Steve McClaren. Other rounds included some taxing geography questions on islands presented by East Midlands Today’s James Roberson and a finale on ‘karaoke’ songs, which proved the audience all knew the words to Robbie Williams’ ‘Angels’! The highly entertaining evening involved representatives from many local businesses, such as Bowmer & Kirkland (who were the principal sponsors), 3aaa, Toyota and Morley Hayes, and included a delicious three-course meal as well as a fund-raising auction conducted by Steve Salloway and raffle, and a touching and thought-provoking speech by a Marie Curie nurse that showed just how vital their work is.
County Patron of Marie Curie, Lord Lieutenant Willie Tucker, commented: ‘For the third year the Derbyshire Brain Game has proved to be a real winner for the people of Derbyshire. To raise over £28,000 was fantastic and my thanks go to Alan Woods and the organising committee as well as the ladies of the Derbyshire Marie-Curie Committee for all their hard work and support.’
