Strike a Light is a new festival bringing theatre and live entertainment to Gloucester working in partnership with Battersea Arts Centre and the Collaborative Touring Network.
Strike a Light aims to connect existing groups, encouraging people to work together and share experience & expertise, and to support emerging artists, musicians and performers. The event will be a chance for local people to be inspired to come together, chat and be inspired.

• Thursday September 25
Festival Launch, 7:30pm-11pm

The festival launch will feature live music from Romania, Middle Eastern street food, Adrift / Afloat – a rehearsed reading based on Mammalian Diving Reflex’s residency in Gloucester earlier in the year, plus sneak previews of new work, DJ’s and dancing.

First showings of 3 new pieces of emerging work from Gloucestershire based artists. This work has been delivered in partnership with Theatre Gloucestershire and generously funded by The Summerfield Trust

The Incredible Book Eating Boy by Oliver Jeffers, 1pm onwards

“Henry loved books, but not like you and I like books… He loved to EAT books!”
This adaptation of Oliver Jeffers’ award-winning children’s book by Bootworks Theatre follows the story of a boy with a voracious appetite for books. And better still, he realises the more books he eats, the smarter he gets.
This unique performance for 4+ year-olds and their grown-ups uses live performance, puppetry and back projection. Each performance is 5 minutes long, performed for two people at a time and repeats 30 times a day.
Folk in a Box, 1pm onwards

Folk in a Box is a one-on-one music venue and performance space. It is a bespoke wooden box with a little front door for audience members and a little back door for performers. One audience member is allowed in at a time. The door is closed behind them. They are given one song, performed by one musician. It’s simple, but works like a charm.

In this triple bill, three distinctly different hip hop choreographies are seamlessly woven together like a concept album. The Black Album is music-inspired dance.
From Jazzanova to Mozart, Woodkid to Trentemoller, Linkin Park to Beethoven, Avant Garde Dance’s contemporary choreography endeavours to take you on a journey experiencing the many complex and cool shades of black.
