The ‘eggcentric’ event returns to the Barley Mow pub on 3rd August 2013
The 2013 Hen Racing World Championships will be held on Saturday 3rd August at 1.30pm at the Barley Mow pub in Bonsall. This years marks the 24th anniversary since the first championship was held at the 18th century freehouse, although it is thought that the tradition of hen racing could date back as far as 1892.
Landlord David Wragg explains, ‘We think it started with farmers having a drink outside the pub and watching the chickens scratching about, and saying to each other, “I bet that black hen passes the bucket before the white one”.’
The event is a great day out for the whole family and attracts large crowds, with local people and even international visitors. ‘Last year we had some Australians on holiday in Matlock with their relatives. They hired a hen for the day and got into the final!’ Landlady Colette Dewhurst remembers. ‘People can bring their own hens, rent a hen, or just watch the fun.’
David adds, ‘Last year 40 hens were entered and it’s looking like a similar number this year from the enquiries we’ve had.’
It’s not just the hens that have people ‘flocking’ to the Barley Mow, the pub also has a great real ale reputation - it’s a previous winner of the local CAMRA ‘Pub Of The Year’ award - and there will be a Thornbridge Beer Festival at the event, a superb range of cask ciders, and hot and cold food. Morris dancing and other attractions promise to make it a memorable occasion.
