The National Trust has won the much coveted Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) Client of the Year Award 2013 for three new buildings, including Chedworth Roman Villa in Gloucestershire.
The award honours the key role that a good client plays in the creation of fine architecture and National Trust received three nominations - Chedworth Roman Villa by Feilden Clegg Bradley, Giant’s Causeway Visitor Centre by Heneghan Peng and Stowe Gardens Visitor Centre by Cowper Griffith Architects.
Chedworth Roman Villa has previously won a RIBA National Award and was also shortlisted for World Architecture Festival Awards.
The award was collected by Chairman of The National Trust, Simon Jenkins, at the prestigious RIBA Stirling event on September 26, 2013 in London at Central Saint Martins. Simon Jenkins said, “Over the years National Trust have had the opportunity to commission some really outstanding buildings and is grateful to have worked with such talented designers. We are delighted to win this prestigious award for three of our key buildings and credit must go to the associated architects and design teams, for their inspirational creations.”
This year’s judges were Philip Gumuchdjian, Julia Barfield and Head of RIBA Awards, Tony Chapman. They considered clients of all RIBA Award winning schemes but take into account a track record of previous successful commissioning, particularly where this has led to earlier RIBA Awards.
The welcome news comes as Chedworth Roman Villa are gearing up for their Autumn events, including a Hallowe’en trail (Ancient Romans celebrated Hallowe’en too!) and half-term activities to keep the kids occupied, as well as a variety of craft workshops. This is in addition to their regular schedule of guided tours and demonstrations.
