Antlers Gallery, in conjunction with artist Tim Lane, have launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund a unique work of art.
Anima Mundi is a five metre long, graphite drawing on paper, presented in concertina book form, which will be bound in to a limited edition of only two hundred copies. The project is dependent on the success of its Kickstarter campaign; it won’t be produced unless the £8000 total is raised by May 10, 2014.
The Kickstarter campaign is a direct opportunity to support and create original art. Contributors to the campaign will be rewarded with a variety of incentives (full list below) - and all contributors receive recognition and a reward as part of this project.
The book’s title Anima Mundi is Latin for Soul of the World, which the artist says references the ‘intrinsic connection between all living things on the planet; an energy which relates to the world in the same way as the soul is connected to the human body’.
The work is a real labour of love for Cheltenham-born artist Tim Lane. He created the piece during his time employed at Bristol’s Harold Hockey, an artists supply shop. He drew in the original book over a period of two years, and it was never intended for public view. The drawings are intensely personal, charged with the artist’s emotions and innermost inspirations from those two years.
Jack Gibbon, founder of Bristol-based gallery Antlers, spearheads the campaign with Tim. He said: “This is a unique project - the book is the art - the epic drawing within provides a jumping point for exploration of ideas, open ended and enigmatic. The work asks more questions than it answers. Most people have ‘safer’ works of art on their wall, but art such as Anima Mundi is more challenging, and the viewing of the art becomes an event in itself. It’s art that requires us to actively engage with it, making each viewing unique and new.”
The physical way in which Anima Mundi’s concertina pages can be combined with each other allows the book to evade any finite ending, sustaining the mystery.
Tim Lane’s intricate and heavily symbolic draftsmanship often expresses his fascination with the supernatural and the macabre. Tim’s drawings depict a fantasy world in which the imaginable is given a darkly illustrative platform.
