As part of the National Gardens Scheme, Stretton-on-Fosse will open a 4-acre garden at Court House on July 20, and neighbouring picture-book cottage Old Beams.
Court House offers 4 acres of interest and variety; a newly-planted North Wall; sweeping lawns edged with richly planted herbaceous borders, and a Winter Garden (the final resting place of the dear departed Court House dogs whose little headstones peep out from foliage).
Topiaried fox and hounds leap into the recently restored walled Kitchen Garden with views to Ilmingon Hill. There is a Fernery, Rose Garden and greenhouse dense with succulents for sale to visitors.
Since 1927, one of the great pleasures of British Spring and Summer has been to visit lovingly tended, privately-owned gardens in bloom and bud, whether formal gardens in country estates, the more intimate village cottage garden, or small, carefully cultivated back plots. All of which are opened under the banner of the National Gardens Scheme charity.
There is a double benefit to visiting NGS gardens such as Stretton-on-Fosse; time spent happily in beautifully tranquil settings that are the pride and joy of their owners (followed by the option of tea with scrumptious home-baked cakes), but also the knowledge that the entrance fee paid by each visitor contributes to the outstanding work of national cancer care charities. In the last 10 years, the NGS has donated £22 million to nursing, caring and gardening charities.
With the support of garden owners and visitors, National Garden Scheme openings helped in 2013 to generate £2.1 million for palliative nursing charities Macmillan Cancer Support, Help the Hospices, and Marie Curie Cancer Care.
