This year’s Dovedale Arts Festival promises a packed programme of events from 10th to 11th June
A colourful programme of events is in store for visitors to this year’s Dovedale Arts Festival. On Friday, leading cultural historian and broadcaster Sir Christopher Frayling promises an evening to remember as he talks about writer Angela Carter and her compelling engagement with the Gothic in film, art and literature – all to the accompaniment of the Mighty Compton Organ at Dovedale Garage in Thorpe.
On Saturday, the Allegri String Quartet is back by popular demand and on Sunday, Robert Bathurst and Virge Gilchrist present their dramatisation of Christopher Reid’s ‘Song of Lunch’, fresh from performances in Chichester and London. Thomas Pakenham talks about his lifelong love affair with trees following a walk at Dovedale; QCs Jeremy Hutchinson and Thomas Grant bring to life Sunday Times’ best-seller Jeremy Hutchinson’s Case Histories; opera director David Pountney and art historian Paul Hills discuss the artist and poet David Jones; politicians Caroline Lucas and Natascha Engel debate today’s challenges in Westminster; historian Juliet Nicolson traces seven generations of her extraordinary family; and biographers Adam Sisman and Zachary Leader discuss writing about modern authors. Bicycle ‘wizard’ Andrew Ritchie, creator of the Brompton bike, delivers an informal talk on his invention on 12th at 9.30am (no ticket required).
Displays of paintings, sculptures, collages and ceramics by artists Sarah Anderson, Juliet Bankes, Judy Gilley, Susanna Penrose, Jane Rye, Jocasta Shakespeare and Bridget Whitehouse complete the vibrant offering.
