Dr Jenner’s House & Garden have invited Bill Francis of the WWT Slimbridge Wetland Centre to give the latest in its series of Old Cyder House Talks on Thursday, February 20.
In 1946 the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT) was founded by Sir Peter Scott on the New Grounds, near the village of Slimbridge. The founder was almost a Renaissance man with a wide variety of skills and interests, not all related to his main purpose in life: the conservation of wildlife and its environment, in particular wildfowl (swans, geese and ducks). From a small beginning, the WWT has grown to a conservation organisation earning global respect for its work.
Bill Francis, a long-serving Slimbridge volunteer, will give details of the growth of the WWT Slimbridge Wetland Centre and its other centres across the United Kingdom. He will go on to give examples of the Trust’s activities world-wide in efforts to secure the survival of a wide variety of threatened species. This will include description of the breeding and raising of birds at Slimbridge, bird ringing and studies of bird migration across the globe. The talk ends with a description of the variety of wild birds that visit Slimbridge throughout the year.
