Birdworld, near Farnham

While the park opens throughout the year, Birdworld really hits its stride from the start of April. Having first opened to the public as a small family business back in 1968, this attraction has grown and grown with Penguin Island, Underwater World and Outback Landing highlights. Bocketts Farm, near Leatherhead

Over the spring months, Bocketts welcome around 550 new-born lambs to the farm. There are few sights more joyous and heart-warming than watching the cute little critters’ early explorations. With everything from pig racing to play areas, plus a kitchen garden that produces delicious home-made jams, chutneys, sauces, soups and puddings, it’s a great family day out. British Wildlife Centre, Lingfield

One of Dame Judi Dench’s favourite Surrey attractions, at the British Wildlife Centre you can expect to see some 40 species of native wildlife, from foxes and hedgehogs to otters, red squirrels and many others. Once-upon-a-time a dairy farm, the wildlife centre was started in 1997 by David Mills and is a must-visit for nature lovers. Tickets: adults, £11.50; children (3-15), £8.50; family, £37
