From The Pickwick Papers to Poldark, the Wiltshire town of Corsham has many colourful stories to tell

Bath stone: Underground quarries south and west of Corsham.

Gastard: Part of the civil parish, there was a freak hailstorm in 1967, with some measuring three inches in diameter.

Neston: Another part of the civil parish, Neston Park is the home of the brewing Fuller family and the world-famous ‘London Pride’.

Corsham Court: Saxon royal manor house, now home to the Methuen Family. Bath Academy of Art used to be housed in part of the house, along with Beechfield House on the Middlewick side of Corsham. Also, the location for The Remains of the Day (1993), Wives and Daughters (1999), Barry Lyndon (1975), and Poldark (2014).

Cosa’s Ham: Old English for homestead, or village. It was also known as ‘Corsham Regis’ due to its reputed association with the Anglo Saxon Ethelred of Wessex.

Parks: Grounds around Corsham Court were designed by Capability Brown and Humphry Repton.

Festivals: Home to Blue Sky Festival, as well as Magic and Mayhem Festival at the Pounds Art Centre.

Pickwick: The town was the inspiration for Charles Dickens’ The Pickwick Papers.

Beechfield: Used to house part of Bath Academy of Art.

Middlewick House: Once the home of Camilla Parker Bowles, and now owned by Nick Mason of Pink Floyd.

Twinning: Twinned with Jargeau in France.

MoD Corsham: Formerly Basil Hill Barracks, established between Corsham and Box in 1936.

Tess of the D’Urbervilles: The 2008 BBC series was filmed partly in Church Street.

Harold Brakspear (1837-1898): The restoration architect and archeologist lived here.

Elizabeth Hurley: She attended St Patrick’s Primary School.

The Table Gallery: Antiques shop owned by Paul Martin from BBC’s Flog it.

Jim and William Smith: 20th-century Corsham cricketers.

Rini Templeton: American Graphic artist and sculptor who studied at Bath Academy of Art.

Axel Scheffler: The Gruffalo illustrator went to Bath Academy of Art... and was in the same year as Katie!

Michal Tippett (1905-1998): The composer lived at Parkside on the High Street.

Great West Way: The 125-mile touring route goes through Corsham.

St Bart’s: St Bartholomew’s Church was built in the middle of the 12th century, but its origins are Saxon.

Fairtrade: Corsham is a Fairtrade Town.

Peacocks: The showy birds can be found walking all around Corsham, and in the summer the town hosts The Peacock Arts Trail.
