Win dinner, bed and breakfast
This month marks the return of Cornwall’s now annual asparagus festival celebrating this fantastic veg which comes into season in May.
Taking place on 19 May and hosted at the Penventon Park Hotel in Redruth, the Cornwall Asparagus Festival will feature a mixture of tasters, food stalls, cookery demonstrations and an opportunity to meet Cornwall’s largest asparagus growers, John and Jenny Keeler from Tregassow Farm.
John Keeler, has been growing asparagus for almost 15 years on his family farm outside of Truro. Each year they grow about 60 acres of asparagus each year, harvesting 12-15 tonnes – much of it sold at the twice-weekly farmer’s market in Truro and the county’s farmshops.
“We have built up quite a reputation,” says John. “People know the quality is good and the presentation is first class. There’s not often a surplus, it’s mostly sold in Cornwall.”
But, he admits, that wasn’t always the case. “We had quite a job in the beginning – people didn’t know what to do with it – we produced leaflets on how to cook it; now a lot of people look forward to the season.
“It’s quite different when it’s grown local and it’s fresh. I quite like it grilled or steamed the traditional way standing up in the pan, with a little bit of butter, they are delicious.”
Last year’s event attracted more than 250 visitors and this year is expected to be bigger and better than ever with Penventon’s executive head chef Joe Lado Deesa masterminding the event.
