Whether you prefer yours in a tub or from a waffle cone with all of the trimmings, Cornwall is home to some of the best ice cream parlours in England. In no particular order we pick nine of the best places to indulge in a scoop or three
Jelberts
Where can I find it? New Road in Newlyn. Whilst the shop appears relatively unassuming from the outside, Jelberts is in fact a Newlyn institution, famous for its locally made ice cream. Just keep an eye out for the shop with queues out of the door on a hot day - it will be that one.
Flavours: Jelberts just sells straight-up, no-frills homemade vanilla ice cream best served with a dollop of clotted cream and a flake.
Where can I find it? Moomaid of Zennor is sold in a number of local shops, restaurants and delis across the Duchy but there are dedicated parlours in St Ives and Porthtowan. A pop-up parlour near the dairy farm by Zennor Hill can be found in the summer months.
Flavours: Think Italy meets Cornwall when it comes to ice cream at Moomaids. Expect inventive flavours such as Espresso Martini, Salted Almond and Prosecco Sorbet.
Where can I find it? This teeny tiny shop once served as a weighbridge at the harbour in Charlestown but it's now used to dish out some of the finest frozen desserts in Cornwall. We wonder if Aidan Turner popped in for a scoop whilst taking a break from filming Poldark?
Flavours: Each flavour of ice cream sold at Tall Ships is carefully thought out with whimsical seafaring names to match. We like the sound of 'Oreo Ahoy' made using crunchy Oreo cookies and the 'Emerald Mint' with peppermint and Belgian dark chocolate.
Perran Dairy Ice Cream Parlour
Where can I find it? The parlour can be found in Perranporth and will be pretty easy to spot due to its distinctive baby pink exterior and decorative Mr Whippy cones sitting proudly above the door.
Flavours: Perran Ice Cream Parlour has some of the most imaginative and dreamy flavours spotted this side of the Tamar Bridge and they're as famous for their waffles and crepes as they are for their ice cream. Recent flavours include Jaffa Cake, Jammie Dodger, Eton Mess and Blueberry Cheesecake. They even do a Mini Egg flavour at Easter - what a treat!
Where can I find it? You'll find the café nestled nicely along the South West Coast Path between Wheal Coates and Great Wheal Charlotte. It's the perfect spot to cool off with an ice cream after a walk.
Flavours: If you buy one thing from the café, make it one of their legendary 'Hedgehog' ice creams. It consists of scoops of vanilla ice cream topped with clotted cream and covered in hazelnuts. The 'Fox' ice cream coated in crumbly flapjack is just as good.
Where can I find it? Roskilly's is stocked in lots of local shops but for a real authentic experience you should take a day trip to Roskilly's Farm where you can grab an ice cream from their cosy tea room afterwards.
Flavours: Roskilly's makes up to thirty different flavours of ice cream so you're spoilt for choice. All of the ingredients are made on the farm - from the ice cream right down to the toppings. They're famous for their decadent sundaes and thick creamy milkshakes too.
Angelato Artisan Ice Cream Bar
Where can I find it? Tucked away in the historic streets of Cornwall, Angelato brings a taste of Italy to mainland Cornwall. You can find the shop at the foot of Truro Cathedral.
Flavours: From traditional favourites such as chocolate and vanilla, to flavours a little more exotic such as pistachio; salted caramel and even mince pie at Christmas, there are plenty of yummy options to tempt you. A fun fact about gelato is that it contains 50-60% less fat than ice cream so we can have twice as much - right?
Where can I find it? You'll find Nauti overlooking the boats bobbing in Porthleven Harbour. There's seating both inside and out and the café is dog-friendly. Doggies like ice cream just as much as humans after all.
Flavours: Good ol' Cornish favourite Roskilly's is served here and Nauti supplies all thirty flavours too (our favourite is the white chocolate and raspberry). In fact, the majority of Nauti's major suppliers are local which is always a winner in our books.
Where can I find it? There are two shops in the centre of Hayle; one on Penpol Terrace and the other in Market Square. Mr B's also has a retro ice cream van available to hire for weddings for the true ice cream aficionado couple.
Flavours: Where to start? Mr B's has the menu dreams are made of; from white chocolate Kinder Bueno, and Bakewell tart, to New York cheese and sponge pudding, name your favourite sweet treat and Mr B's will most likely have made it into an ice cream flavour. Check out the full menu here.
