Jane Clark is wowed by the New Farm Restaurant at Over Stratton, South Petherton

There is an air of Enid Blyton here. I expected to sit next to the Famous Five, now with children of their own, equally fresh-faced and ready for an adventure.

From back in the 1800s this house and farm were lived in and worked on by generations of chef Jane Bond's family, until they diversified 25 years ago. Jane's husband Crispin helps in the kitchen, bakes the bread and works in the gardens to produce many of the vegetables they use. Her sister Sue is front of house and together they run this award-winning restaurant and guest house.

There are an above average number of vegetarian and vegan choices and the steaks, lamb and duck are grown slowly by local suppliers and it shows. But it's neither self-righteous nor crusading. Jane's take on quality food served with impeccable provenance does not shout 'worthy' it shouts 'zesty, fresh and well-seasoned'.

I ate with a colleague. She is a hearty meat eater and 'five-starred' her steak. I have been vegetarian for ten years and enjoyed that I had choice and new things to try. I ordered Jane's Veg Wellington. It looked like the meaty original and delivered a hefty savoury richness; that's clever.

The rooms are fitted with Sophie Allport designs and flagstones and wood feature to soften the washed stone walls. There is generous space between the tables and the background music wasn't intrusive but was pleasant and interesting. Conversation here is made easy by giving you space to utter the odd secret and yet be a part of a lively and friendly ambience.

I drank Jane's home-made elderflower fizz with my meal, made with fresh flowers, oranges and lemons. I am smiling just recalling the taste. The wine list is good and cocktails are available. There are set menus - £19.50 for two and £22.50 for three courses and the a la carte is not much above that.

The desserts are takes on the traditional, for example fig and sticky coffee pudding. We had meringues with cream and home grown rhubarb sauce; balanced sharpness and sweetness, it was just perfect.

New Farm Restaurant opens Wednesday to Saturday in the evenings and Friday lunchtimes and is highly recommended in its TripAdvisor reviews. One said "This is how food should be sourced, prepared and delivered". That simple phrase says it all. This is really exciting restaurant food served simply.

I loved it and I will be going back for tea and lashings of home-made elderflower fizz.
