Two Steps, Sheffield Another establishment that is now part of local history, Two Steps has been serving chippy teas to the people of Sheffield since 1895 and started life as a ‘Fried Fish Dealer’ It is a small and unassuming building, but we figure that with the explosion of cheaply available fast food available elsewhere, it would not have survived this long if they didn’t know what they were doing. 249 Sharrowvale Road, Sheffield, South Yorkshire, S11 8ZE twostepssheffield.co.uk

Walkers This fish restaurant — which offers takeaway as long as it’s not really busy — is located in East Ayton near Scarborough and is a favourite with Mrs Greenway, aka Mission Control. Alongside the main attraction, which is fried in dripping, it serves up terrific desserts. Gluten-free batter is available. 17 Main Street, East Ayton, Scarborough YO13 9HJ walkersfishrestaurant.co.uk

The Scrap Box, Dunnington This is easy to miss, because it’s situated in a lay-by on the A1079 near York. OK, that location might not sound inviting but the fish and chips — cooked in dripping — are absolutely top notch (voted York’s best) and it’s quickly become my regular chippy. There’s a seated section, too. Trunk Road Services, A1079 Hull Road, Dunnington, York YO19 5LP thescrapbox.fish

Robertsons, Whitby A fabulous Whitby chippy with a children’s menu, plus gluten-free batter for those who want it. Millers, Haxby I had to include this 77-year-old business in Haxby, near York, because it’s just been voted the UK’s Fish and Chip Shop of the Year. Winning the accolade wasn’t easy. Judges were looking for responsible sourcing and a diverse menu, among other things. Millers also offer gluten-free options. 55 The Village, Haxby, York, YO32 2JE millersfish.co.uk

The Magpie Cafe, Whitby The late AA Gill — one of the most acerbic restaurant critics in the business — said the Magpie Café overlooking the harbour in Whitby (which re-opened last December after being destroyed by fire) served ‘the best fish and chips in the world’. The Empire, Outwood This film-themed restaurant on the A61 at Outwood, housed in a former cinema, is one of the few drive-thru fish and chip takeaways in the country.
