Welcome

We are in a period of massive change. The UK is set to be radically altered over the next two years following the Brexit vote – both for better and for worse. At these times it is worth remembering the world is always in a state of flux. And it is only by looking back we realise how far we have come. This volume of A Celebration of Sussex Life has a theme of then and now, not only documenting change, such as how the horse and cart gave way to the motor car on our roads, but also how much has stayed the same. Landmarks like Lewes Castle, Battle Abbey and the county’s medieval churches have remained a constant comforting presence for generations.

Inside these pages are tales about towns and villages full of characters who were passionate about their surroundings – from the village which declared itself an independent state, to important landmarks created or restored to their former glory through public support. There are heroes, villains, devastating blazes, the devil in a dress and even a few ghosts thrown in for good measure.

I hope you enjoy this glimpse at Sussex’s storied past. For more tales from the county’s rich heritage read Sussex Life every month or visit www.sussexlife.co.uk.
