It’s one of the highlights of the social calendar. This year, as we mark 50 years since the decriminalisation of homosexuality in the UK, the volunteers that run Brighton Pride look forward to a Summer of Love

This year’s Pride (4-6 August) looks set to be bigger and better than ever, with Pet Shop Boys and Years and Years among the headliners in Preston Park. Events such as the stunning Pride Community Parade, the Festival, the Village Party and the Pride Dog Show remind us of the diversity and connectedness of our community. This year marks 50 years since the decriminalisation of homosexuality in the UK – the theme Summer of Love celebrates that whilst acknowledging that in other parts of the world there is much work to be done.

Brighton Pride is an important part of our community calendar and as well as the headline performers, lots of local stars help make the weekend a sparkling celebration.

Not only is the UK’s biggest Pride event run by volunteers, it also raises money for LGBT and HIV charities in Brighton and Hove, distributed by not-for-profit The Rainbow Fund. There has always been an element of fundraising in Brighton Pride’s 26-year history and now £1 from every ticket sold for the Pride Festival, and £1 from every wristband sold for the Pride Village Party, goes directly to The Rainbow Fund and their independent grants panel, to assess applications for grants.

Last year Pride raised £90,000 – enabling groups and organisations to continue their work, and to fund some innovative projects. In 2016 those included Allsorts Youth Project who provide vital support for young people; MindOut who deliver pioneering work for people with mental health issues; GEMS and Older And Out, both organisations who are providing essential social networking and support opportunities for older people; and the LGBT Community Safety Forum who delivered the Accessibility Matters project for the event, making Pride more accessible and safer for disabled, blind, deaf and older people.
