Rare chance to view vintage aviation classics
Aviation fans are being offered a rare opportunity to see some vintage aviation classics at Europe’s largest annual fly-in of civilian-owned historic aircraft next weekend.
The Great Vintage Flying Weekend (GVFWE) will once again return to Cotswold Airport, at Kemble, on July 30 and 31 2011, when it is hoped a wide variety of beautifully restored machines from yesteryear will attend.
Due to problems with the weather in previous years, which made it difficult for many aircraft to attend, a ‘back to basics’ approach has been adopted in that GVFWE will be a pure fly-in, without any of the usual planned displays or trade exhibitions. Admission prices have been reduced accordingly.
However, GVFWE organiser Glen Moreman says there will still be plenty for people to enjoy. Tiger Moths, Austers, YAKS, Chipmunks and Hornet Moths are among the aircraft it is hoped will take part.
He said: “We’re pleased to announce that GVFWE will once again take place but we’ve decided to return to the original format and make it more of a casual fly-in, rather than a fully-fledged airshow-type event.
“The weather hasn’t been kind to us in recent years and, due to the nature of the aircraft, it has made it very difficult for them to reach us.
“However, there has still been a lot of interest shown and for anyone wishing to visit this year, there will be some amazing aircraft for them to see.”
A selection of beautifully restored machines that were sold during major sales of surplus wartime aircraft and equipment at RAF Kemble, at the end of the Second World War, will be among those taking part.
Meanwhile, visitors to AV8 bistro, situated next to the control tower, will be able to take advantage of a �5 meal deal, whilst watching the arrivals.
Entrance to the Great Vintage Flying Weekend will be via Jackaments Bottom Lane, off the A433 Cirencester to Tetbury Road, and will be signposted.
Admission will �5 per person each day (on the gate only) or �10 per car with two or more occupants.
