It’s definitely a ‘hats on’ time of year.

When it comes to hats, Amanda Field is definitely ahead of the game.

And she lives by the words of the legendary Audrey Hepburn who famously said; 'Life is a party - dress for it'.

But Amanda s only too aware that hats can be scary things. They are for big days and special occasions, and can be daunting.

As summer brings race days, garden parties and weddings, she urges people to stay calm when it comes to hats and make wearing them enjoyable.

Amanda is based in Helmsley but she holds workshops across Yorkshire creating bespoke hats and headpieces.

Her skills were honed training with Rose Cory, who was the Queen Mother's milliner, holding a Royal Warrant.

Amanda has also recently launched Trimming Workshops for groups of five which give fashionistas the chance to work their own magic on their existing hats, breathing new life into them with designer trimmings and accessories - as well as Amanda's couture advice to make sure it looks perfect.

As the highlights of the headwear season are upon us, Amanda says: Think of it as an enjoyable experience.

'Every milliner hears the words, 'hats just don't suit me.

'This simply isn't true. It could be a confidence thing because people are not used to wearing them. Or, simply that someone has tried on shapes that don't flatter.'

Her advice?

'If you're shopping for a hat, take along someone whose opinion you trust and value.

Most of all allow yourself time. Last-minute hat buying can limit you in terms of bespoke millinery and causes unwanted stress and sometimes mistakes.

Schedule in coffee and cake and at least one glass of something fizzy on the day.'

a few basics to consider:

- Face shape: If you have an oval face, most hat shapes will suit.

- For other face shapes using angles and brim size to flatter will achieve a balanced beautiful look.

- Whether opting for a large or small hat, it is possible to create height and flattering lines and angles.

- An old rule of thumb was never wear a hat wider than your shoulders. However, rules are made to be broken!

Amanda's Trimming Workshops cost £85 including all materials. For details email glamour@amandafield.co.uk
