At Shoreham College we believe the learning of a foreign language is an integral part of creating a well-rounded education that will present our pupils with the best opportunities to succeed in today’s global village. Therefore language study at GCSE in either French or Spanish is part of our core curriculum. At Shoreham College we offer French from our junior department and French and Spanish from Key Stage 3 through to GCSE. Once the pupils make that all-important transition into Year 7, they will continue to study French, as well as a seven week introductory Spanish curriculum that will provide them with the basics to study a second language. Year 8 will refocus their language study on French with the last half of the academic year delving further into Spanish, preparing them for further study. We want our pupils to build a strong foundation in both Spanish and French in order for them, and us, to make a clear and informed decision in regard to their GSCEs to ensure that their chosen language is right for them, and will offer them the best opportunity to succeed. In Year 9, pupils will have a full year of study in their chosen language, working towards an entry level certificate, which will provide our pupils with a firm grasp of vocabulary and general use of grammar that will support them throughout two years of intensive GCSE study. Whether in French or Spanish, all our pupils will experience each language through the establishment of vocabulary and its application. This vocabulary will be applied to real-life situations through the creation of speaking exercises that will encourage our pupils to use the language properly and with confidence. Reading, writing and listening skills will be put to the test through different uses of media to ensure our pupils are experiencing success in all skill areas.The modern foreign language department is constantly evolving to adapt and to improve its pedagogical approach to meet the ever-growing needs of our pupils. The incorporation and use of ICT has become essential, and is extremely beneficial to pupil progression. It has opened up an avenue of independent learning that has shown great results and provided our pupils with support and a means of taking their learning to the next level. Throughout the study of French and Spanish, we offer different trips in order for our pupils to form real world connections with the language they are studying. There are trips to France to experience the ins and outs of a chocolate factory in Boulogne and to experience mountain-biking and taking Spanish cooking lessons in the hills of Avila. We pride ourselves on the importance of studying languages, where pupils can see and appreciate the value that it brings.
