Vital ingredients of a great education? As well as a broad academic education which encourages genuine curiosity and independence of thought, a great education finds and develops each individual's talents and personal qualities so they can be their best selves.
What makes your school so special? The pupils and staff are all part of a friendly and caring community. The school excels in all areas with pupils going on to Oxbridge and many other top universities. With a 400 year long history there are many distinguished alumni including Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Charles Laughton, Kieran Bracken and Will Greenwood.
What made you want to teach? Principally, it was a love of my subject, and also the challenge of helping young people to appreciate it too.
Brief career and personal history: Started teaching atan HMC boarding and day school in Berkshire, from 1998- 2002 Head of Modern Language at Winchester College, following that Deputy Head at an HMC dayschool in Yorkshire and from there took up his present post at Stonyhurst. Interests include Drama the arts and outdoor pursuits.
Describe your approach to educating young people:In order to help young people become their best selves, we have to challenge them to give of their very best, to have high expectations of them, and we really have to know them as individuals.
Who inspires you and why? As a young teacher at Winchester, I was greatly inspired by Alan Conn, my head of department, for his scholarship, integrity and sheer dedication.
Best and worst subjects? I was best at languages and rather bad at design technology.
