August is as good as it gets when it comes to fabulous race days in Yorkshire. Add plaits or an on-point ponytail to make race day hairstyles your own. The team at Rush Hair in York love getting ladies race day-ready. They’ve created these key hair looks for on-point locks.

ROYAL PLAITS

If you're gunning for top place in the best-dressed competition, then there's no better way to show you mean business than sporting your own hair crown. Start with a classic plait and part your hair in a way that feels natural for you. Clip one side out of the way for now, and begin plaiting the other by creating three strands from the top of your hair and crossing them over. As you continue to cross, keep adding more hair until you have made a french plait. When all of the hair is added, secure in place with a subtle, clear band.

Unclip the other side and repeat the process. Wrap both plaits around the side of your head and secure in place with discreet grips to form a crown. Now you have the perfect style for a flowery fascinator, or a great base to accessorise with jewels and statement clips.

OLD-FASHION WAVES

When you have big statement hats and fascinators, it can be wise to choose a more subtle hair style to balance them out - but that doesn't mean it has to be boring. Wavy curls are a tried-and-tested look for the red carpet, so why not copy the stars? Start by towel-drying freshly-washed hair and applying styling spray - we usually recommend the heat activated L'Oreal Professionnel's Tecni ART Pli Shaper spray. This locks in all the moisture and creates a bouncy texture and glossy shine.

Afterwards, blow-dry your hair with plenty of volume to encourage movement, then start curling small sections with a large-barrelled heating tong. Twist these sections in a vertical motion towards you and hold for around 20 seconds. Continue with the rest of your hair then spray with L'Oreal Professionnel's Beach Waves. If you want to add volume to your tresses, tease the curls gently with your fingers.

PONY UP

For a look that completes any outfit, you can't beat a classic chic ponytail. Start by backcombing your mane at the top of your head - messier is better in this case. Tie in place with a hair band and pull out a few strands to gently frame your face. This simple look gives you plenty of scope for accessories including using delicate embellishments, a waterfall of flowers or shimmering jewel headbands.

Always secure with your favourite hairspray so you won't be caught out when the race - and weather - heats up.
