Achieving your dream smile could be just what you need to boost your confidence, but what treatment is best for you?

“Every mouth is different,” says Jodie Wright from Select Dental in Exmouth, “and it’s crucial to tailor each treatment to the individual, so we can provide the best results for them.”

“Whether you have a problem with discoloration, crooked teeth or broken or missing teeth, we offer a variety of different options. Select Dental & Denture is an incredibly relaxed environment, so there’s no need to worry, you’re in safe hands and we’ll take the time you need to find the best solution for you.”

Below, Jodie shares four things to consider to create your perfect, healthy smile.

1. Teeth whitening, straightening and composite bonding

“Following a full assessment of a patient’s mouth, and providing everything is healthy, they may want to go a step further to improve their teeth,” Jodie tells us. “There are lots of options available to create a better-looking smile with minimal treatment which can be discussed with our friendly dentists and our treatment coordinators.”

Jodie explains that you can achieve the look you desire without the need for invasive, irreversible procedures like veneers that have been prevalent in the news recently. “It can be a damaging treatment requiring a lot of maintenance – we are finding patients are unhappy with the result of their dental treatment done outside the U.K. Sometimes we can’t proceed with anymore treatment due to the risk of tooth loss, so it can be very difficult to resolve.

“At Select Dental, we offer a range of services and can recommend treatment which is cost-effective and simple to perform with minimal maintenance, whilst creating the best-looking results for your smile. Teeth whitening is ideal for anyone suffering from natural staining caused by coffee, tea and red wine. Our process of stain removal and polishing of the teeth is easily done and doesn't take long at all.”

Select Dental also offers straightening treatment for anyone concerned with crooked teeth. “After straightening treatment, all the patient needs to do is to use some form of retention afterwards, in the form of a plastic or wire retainer which will continue to keep the teeth straight.

Dr Veronica Cabanas, Dr Mahir Hussain, Dr Miro Nikolov, Dr Ciprian Iosub and Dr Roberto De Sousa are all available for new patient assessments to discuss all treatment options available.

2. Regular check-ups

Whether you have healthy teeth or not, Jodie explains that attending general check-ups on a regular basis is an important part of maintaining your oral health. “Routine dental care with the support of a hygienist will improve your gum health and keep your teeth nice and clean,” she says. “All of our dentists are available to provide the best quality check-ups so you can be assured nothing will be missed.”

But how often should we be visiting the dentist to keep our mouths healthy? “Well, everyone’s needs are different,” Jodie explains. “But I would generally recommend between six and twelve months, alongside regular visits to the hygienist which can be as frequent as every three months if needed. Come in and see us and we’ll be able to discuss the best options for you.”

3. Dentures

If you have one or several missing teeth, then dentures could be the solution you need to help you smile with confidence again.

“Our business owner and Clinical Dental Technician, Rob Gosling, is highly experienced in fitting dentures, so you’re in the safest hands,” says Jodie. “There’s a myth that dentures are only suitable for those over a certain age, but that’s not true at all. Dentures can be fitted for any age, even for young people who may have lost teeth due to a sporting injury.”

Select Dental are renowned for their quality dentures, offering a range of options to choose from. “This isn’t a one-size-fits-all procedure,” Jodie tells us, “and we have a variety of qualities so you can get the feel and aesthetic you prefer.

“We’ll begin with a consultation to discuss the patient’s needs, and there will be multiple appointments arranged as part of the planning process, where we can assess the moulds and measurements of the mouth to ensure it fits well. After this, the dentures will be made in wax to make sure the dentist and patient are happy before they’re made into an acrylic or metal for the final fit.

“It’s a journey which we take the patient on with us for every step of the way,” she adds.

4. Dental implants

If, however, you’re searching for a permanent solution to broken or missing teeth, then dental implants might be the preferable option for you. “This is the closest replacement to a natural tooth,” Jodie explains. “Technology has come a long way since treatments begun back in the 60s and more people are eligible for them now.

“If you’re wearing full dentures, then a full mouth of implants would greatly improve your quality of life, where you can enjoy food without having to worry. Even if you’re 30 years old and want to have a long-term solution to improving your smile, then implants can be a great option.

“If looked after,” Jodie tells us that “implants will last a lifetime - they’re a life-changing investment, and Dr Ruairi Cunnane is available at Select Dental for Dental Implants.”
